Cover shows San Francisco Mar 20 transit and nice strike in red of the scarce "China and Japan/Steam Service" handstamp. Opened at right, fresh and Fine to Very Fine, scarce.

1874 (Oct 14), folded business letter from Yokohama to Providence, RI, "via San Francisco/Overland", franked by three 3¢ US Banknotes in a pair and single (defective) and a 1c single, all cancelled by Yokohama segmented cork cancels with matching "Yokohama/Cot 14/Japan" c.d.s. alongside. Front shows San Francisco Nov 8 transit, fresh and Very Fine, a most attractive cover.
