1875 (June), a magnificent, three color franking cover from Nagoya to the Wyoming Territory, USA, franked with 1 sen brown syllabic 12, 4 sen green syllabic 1 and 10 sen yellow green syllabic 2 tied by Nagoya numeral cancels, with front showing Yokohama/Jun 24/10 AM/Japan transit in black, red "PAID ALL" handstamp and red San Francisco Jul 16 Paid All receiver. A superb cover in all respects, offering a wonderful franking combination and beautiful markings, to an incredibly rare destination; a cover that has it all, a showpiece, Very Fine.

Lot 2859

1875, remarkable redirected cover forwarded to USS Kearsage at Shanghai, a fascinating cover originally carrying a US adhesive, which was removed prior to it's final destination and replaced in its spot by red "PAID ALL" circular handstamp. Cover was originally sent to Nagasaki, where 12 sen Bird Series was added (Scott 46; JSCA 36, syllabic 1) and cancelled by "Nagasaki/Oct 21/Japan" c.d.s. Cover redirected to USS Kearsage, a war ship which achieved its fame during the 1864 Battle of Cherbourg, where it sank the famous Confederate raider, Alabama. Letter was addressed to Stephen Rand, who was sent to the Kearsage in April, 1874, later becoming an Admiral. Reverse shows bold "Nagasaki/Oct 20/4 Postmaster/Japan"c.d.s. and "Yokohama/Oct 11/6 Postmaster/Japan" transit. A remarkable and rare usage, a marvelous exhibition piece., Fine to Very Fine, 1982 ISJP photo certificate.

c. 1875, elegant ornate cover from the French Ministry of Affairs, Yokohama Japan to Paris, a beautiful, highly unusual large size cover, franked by 20 sen rose and five copies of the 30 sen violet, all tied by Yokohama cork killers, with chrysanthemum seal and official French ministry labels affixed to front. Reverse shows incredibly detailed printed design, along with elegant, ornate large red handstamp. Fresh, a splendid item, Very Fine.

1875, ship mail cover from Kobe to Nagasaki, franked with 4 sen rose on foreign wove paper, without syllabic character, type 1, from plate 8, with stamp cancelled by Kobe cork killer, with "Nagasaki/Feb 14/12M./Japan" c.d.s. alongside. A splendid example of this rare stamp used on cover, along with being a very early usage of the Roman letter cancel, a showpiece, Very Fine.

1876 (Nov), mourning cover from Yokohama to Ipswich, England, via America, with 10 sen ultramarine cancelled by Yokohama cork killer with red "Yokohama/ Nov 16/Paid All" along with "5/cents" handstamp in red, "San Francisco/Dec 7/Cal" transit and Hadleigh Dec 26 transit also on front. Reverse shows Ipswich DE 26, 76 receiver. An attractive and scarce usage; opened a bit roughly at top, still Fine to Very Fine.

Reverse shows various French transits, S.F. July 29 transit and Mauries August 20 receiver. Scarce stamp on cover; small piece of cover missing at upper right in no way detracts, Fine to Very Fine.
