SG 117). 1867, Queen Victoria, 1s green, Spray of Rose watermark, single, tied by "644" in barred oval of Ringwood, on mourning cover to Yokohama Japan; manuscript "Via United States" at lower left and red crayon "10" denoting 10 cents due to the UP PO for conveyance across the United States; Ringwood and partial red NY exchange backstamps; cover with trivial edge flaws and without small portion of backflap, otherwise Very Fine.

SG 45). 1858, 2d blue, letters in all four corners, "thick lines", plate 12, horizontal strip of three, vertical pair and single, all tied by "London 19 MR 69" duplex postmark with barred oval, on folded letter to Pignatel & Co. Nagasaki Japan; manuscript "Via Southampton" at upper left; Hong Kong backstamp; upper stamp with scuff and small portion of the corner missing, light horizontal file fold at center through bottom stamp, a Very Fine usage.

Japan, 1879 (Mar. 22), attractive cover from Yokohama to Portland, Oregon, a neat blue envelope franked by single 5 sen brown Old Koban tied by cork killer, with blank "YOKOHAMA MAR 27 1879 " and star despatch c.d.s. alongside. Front shows violet San Francisco April 12 arrival marking. Fresh, Very Fine.

Japan, 1883 (Feb. 17), registered cover from Tokyo to Berlin, franked by a splendid vertical pair of 10 sen Kobans, cancelled by neat dual petal cancels, along with matching "TOKIO 17 Feb 1883 JAPAN" thimble c.d.s., with New York registry label and boxed "R" handstamp. Reverse shows violet blue San Francisco registered transit cancel and Germany 3/31 receiver. A wonderful clean cover with great eye-appeal, Very Fine.

Japan, Postal Card, 1874, 3rd Issue, ½s reddish orange (J.S.C.A. PC5), used in 1878 from Osaka to Yokohama, uprated by a choice example of ½ sen brown Dragon (Scott 5, JSCA 5). The 1878 date reflects a fairly late usage of the ½ sen stamp. Fresh and rare, Very Fine.

Japan, Postal Card, 1873-1945, Outstanding Exhibition. A splendid, wonderfully written-up (by hand) exhibit comprising 168 items--selected for interest, keenly assembled and fully annotated in English--on 80 exhibition pages; the initial 40 pages are dedicated to the regular issues of 1873-1945, including lovely mint examples of the ½s and 1s first issue bi-colors, two mint examples each for syllabic types, plus several select used examples, etc.

Subsequent issues feature mint and used examples, specimens, cancellations with Kensazumi types, numerous lovely uprated usages, illegal uprated usages using postal card cut-outs, excellent postage due examples, several more difficult Bota canceled examples, message/reply card usages including a rare unsevered card example, usages from China, great destinations and more.

The extensive foreign postal card section (78 cards in total) include a magnificent and rare 5s usage from Hiogo to Dresden beautifully marked and preserved, various IJPA and IJPO usages, wonderful destinations and origination examples, Korea usages, rates, remarkable auxiliary markings (i.e., "Too Late"), DLO, postage dues, etc.

We also note the 5r and 6r first issues with special presentation book cancels and much, much more, Fine to Very Fine or better, A great collection as is, yet well suited for further expansion; be sure to see complete images on the web.
