Scott 84), a splendidly fresh and well-centered example, cancelled by "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring datestamp of "[Jan] 5 [18]97" in blue, Fine to Very Fine, an early, and possibly the earliest, date of use of the Red Revenues, since this color cancellation was only used in January 1897.

The inaugural date of the Imperial Post was February 2, 1897, having been postponed from the originally intended date of January 1, 1897. These blue pre-first day cancellations are recorded used on January 11, 13-16, 18, 19, 24 and 30, and, as such, are the earliest recorded dates for any Red Revenues
