Japan, 4 covers from Yokohama addressed to Captain G.L. Smith at Vineyard Haven, Mass., 1878-91, this is a small village on the north east end of Martha's Vineyard. It included a 1878 cover with Yokohama Paid All cds and Forwarding agent's mark from J. D. Carroll & Co. Yokohama on back, 1879 cover, 1883 cover and 1891 cover. The only reference to a Smith in Yokohama is E.R. Smith, the owner of Smith, Archer & Co that was in existence between 1864 to 68. When Archer left, Smith then joined forces with Baker to form Smith, Baker & Co., that lasted till 1915 in Yokohama. This correspondence is most highly likely written by E.R. Smith to his father, Captain G.L. Smith. A very early Japan and US commercial tie documented by these covers. A new find!
