Lot 2001

Hong Kong, 1850 (Aug 23), folded letter from Hong Kong to New York, showing fine strike in red of medium, double circle Crown "Paid at Hong Kong" marking, Webb type 8, along with red London PAID of Oct 26 and Liverpool "L / OC 27 / A" transit. Front shows manuscript "PAID" and "overland via Southampton" and black "New York 12 Nov 5 cts" handstamp. Cover traveled via Cunard "Africa" on first transatlantic voyage to NY, a delightful item, Fine to Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1853 (Mar 26), bilingual stampless cover from Canton to Bombay, India, showing on reverse, black Canton double circle c.d.s. of origin dated March 26th (Webb type 2), along with double circle Hong Kong transit dated on the 27th. Front shows bold, red "CANTON / PAID" double circle handstamp, and "2" in circle rate marking. Scarce marking; some small tears, etc, with small piece missing at upper right, Fine to Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1860 (Sept 20), folded business letter from Shanghai to Newton Corner, Mass, "via Marseilles", showing red, double circle "SHANGHAE / SP 20 / 1860" origin c.d.s., manuscript rate markings, red "London / CT / NO 13 / 60 PAID" handstamp and New York AM Pkt Nov 28 arrival. Reverse shows "Hong Kong / C / SP 25 / 60" transit, lovely usage, Fine to Very Fine.

Lot 2004

Hong Kong, 1861 (April 15), cover from Hong Kong to Colchester, England, with violet printed corner card "via Southampton", showing red "Hong Kong / C / AP 15 / PAID" handstamp, with reverse showing back, same-date Hong Kong origin c.d.s. and Colchester, May 31 receiver. Letter dated April 15 at Hong Kong, but P & O "Behar" sailed on the 13th to Galle, Ceylon. Since this letter reached London on May 31 along with the rest of the mail carried by the "Behar", it appears that it was sent on a later steamer that caught the mail at Singapore; minor flap tears, Fine to Very Fine, only about 5 covers known where such routing occured.

Hong Kong, 1861 (June 10), outer folded business letter from Hong Kong to Cadiz, Spain, from Jardine Matheson, "via Gibraltar", with reverse showing "Hong Kong / C / JU 10 / 61" origin c.d.s., San Roque 29 JUL transit, and Cadiz 31 JUL receiver. Front shows "Gibraltar / A / JY 28 / 61" transit and "4R" rate marking. Clean, Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1862 (Mar 22), "opened" cover from Shanghai to Breslau, Germany, "Prussia via Triest" and "paid" in manuscript, with reverse showing Shanghai MR 22 origin datestamp in black; front shows nice strike in red of the scarce "Shanghae / C / MR 22 / 62 / PAID" handstamp, Webb type 6, along with various rate markings; reverse shows "Hong Kong MR 25" transit, Breslau 5 / 12 receiver etc. A scarce and attractive cover; couple closed tears on back, Fine to Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1863 (Mar 8), cover from Shanghai to Boston, with reverse showing "Shanghae MR 8 63" origin c.d.s., with front showing red, "Shanghae / C / MR 8 / 63 / PAID" handstamp, "London / AP 27 / 63 / PAID" transit in red, plus "Boston AM Pkt. / May 12 / 5" receiver, along with red "16 cents" handstamp and several additional manuscript rate markings. Reverse shows "May 12" handstamp and "Hong Kong / C / MR 12 / 63" transit. Docketed at left, scarce, Fine to Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1863 (July 21), cover from Shanghai to Boston, with "Shanghae / C / JU 21 / 63" origin c.d.s. on reverse, with front showing same date, red "Shanghae / Paid" c.d.s., Webb type 6, along with red, London / PAID, Au 19 transit, bold "Boston A.M / Pkt / SEP 1 / 5" packet arrival, red "16 cents" and various manuscript rate markings, including "due 5". Reverse shows Hong Kong JU 25 transit and Boston Sep 1 receiver, scarce, Fine to Very Fine.

Lot 2010

Hong Kong, 1893 (Mar 22), unfranked mourning cover from Hong Kong to Paris, France, with "Ligne N / 22 MARS 93 / Paq Fr No. 1" handstamp; traveled through the Hong Kong Post Office, and not marked postage due, etc. Traveled on French packet "Caledonien", arriving at Marseille on April 20th, Fine to Very Fine, rare, we do not recall seeing another example of unfranked mail carried by French packet.
