Amoy, 1878 (Nov 26), cover front to Aberdeen "D27", a spectacular cover front, franked by 4¢ and 12¢ watermark CC Victoria issues, the latter a wing margin example, each tied by bold, clean strikes of Amoy "D27" killer and matching … c.d.s. Front shows manuscript "per First Quick Mail" notation, fresh, rare, a showpiece! Very Fine, ex-Pearson and Ishikawa collections.

Lot 2135

Foochow, 1862, negative pre-adhesive marking on piece of market circular to New York, a good size fragment, detailed in Webb on page 267, showing bold, full strike in red of the exceptionally rare, negative "Foo-Chow-Foo China" handstamp. Circular sent via London, with manuscript "via Marseilles" and red London transit dated March 1862, along with several rate markings. Fresh, an extraordinary showpiece, Very Fine, with only 4 examples recorded, 1994 B.P.A. photo certificate accompanies.

Hong Kong, 1898 (Oct 14), "cash" cover from Canton to Ille-et-Vilaine, France, splendid, clean cover, showing bold, full strike of "Canton 14 OCT 98" large dollar chop, with 10¢ Hong Kong Queen Victoria added and cancelled "Hong Kong / A / OC 16 / 98" c.d.s. Reverse shows "Ille et Vilaine 13 NOV 98" receiver. A wonderful example of the pre-paid in China subscriber usage, Very Fine and choice.

Macao, 1850 (datelined Mar 11), folded business letter from Manila to Canton, a superb quality letter from the fabled Augustine Heard correspondence, with reverse showing an amazing strike of "Correio / Macao / 26 Mar 1850" three line handstamp in black (Webb type 6b). Front shows manuscript "16" rate marking; a Gem of a cover! Extremely Fine and choice.

Hong Kong, 1941 (Dec 7), Hong Kong to Jamaica, B.W.I., "Detained in Hong Kong", cover with 5¢ Centenary issue and 15¢ King George VI definitive, tied by "Victoria / 11am / 7 DE / 41 / Hong Kong"c.d.s. to manuscript censored (on front) and violet "Passed by Censor 137" triangular handstamp in violet marking on reverse. Front shows bold "Detained in Hong Kong / By Japanese / From December 1941 to September 1945", with "Half-Way-Tree / OC 27 / Jamaica" receiver on reverse. Fresh; an incredibly rare example of this ever popular marking, Pearl Harbor Day in the West and the day before the Battle of Hong Kong began, Very Fine.

Chungking, 1899 (July), I.P.O. forwarded cover to London, franked by 10¢ Coiling Dragon tied by light, bilingual c.d.s., with front showing 10¢ Hong Kong Victoria tied by unframed, former type 3 Chungking I.P.O. tieprint chop, which shows stop after all letters. Front shows "Chelsea AU 31 99 S.W." transit, while reverse shows Shanghai bilingual 16 JUL 99 transit, Blairgowrie SP 1 99 receiver, fresh, a lovely and attractive cover, Very Fine.
