The RMS Rhone was a British packet ship owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. She was wrecked off the coast of Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands on 29 October 1867 during a hurricane with the loss of approximately 123 lives. PASCAL 1869 1,876 gross tons, length 300ft x beam 33.4ft (91.44m x 10.18m), one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron hull, single screw, speed 10 knots. There was accommodation for 80 passengers. Launched on 13th Dec.1869 by Andrew Leslie & Co, Hebburn-on-Tyne for the Liverpool, Brazil and River Plate Steam Navigation Co (Lamport & Holt), she started her maiden voyage on 20th Apr.1870 from Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. She continued Liverpool - South America services until 1878 when she was transferred to the Belgian flagged subsidiary company Societe de Navigation Royale Belge Sud-Americaine. This company operated weekly mail services between Antwerp, Brazil, Uruguay and the Argentine. In 1887 the ship reverted to her original owners and route and in 1897 was scrapped at Genoa.
