Malaysia: Straits Settlements, 1862 (Mar.), stampless folded letter from Singapore to France via Suez, with black "SINGAPORE / P.O. March 1862" double-circle datestamp (Proud D4) in black, and adjacent "POSS. ANG. V. SUEZ / MARSEILLES" double-circle datestamp in red that was applied to letters arriving on British packets, manuscript at top left reading "via Suez", plus 3 decimes due marking, Very Fine.

The Suez canal opened until 1869, but before that year the mail was transported by rail between Alexandria & Suez in accordance with the Anglo-Egyptian Agreement made in 1858.

Reverse of the envelope with Penang circular receiving, and Dead Letter Office oval datestamps (Proud D2), plus New York machine slogan cancel applied on return to the U.S. and unreadable manuscript inscription, a very well-travelled cover with interesting markings, Very Fine.
