Panama, 1873 (Mar. 15), Folded letter sheet from Valparaiso, Chile, to Bordeaux, France, via Panama, in robin's egg blue, mailed by British Packet with manuscript "Via Panama" endorsement at upper left; reverse bears "Valparaiso/A/MR 15/73/UNPAID" origin, red London AP 28 transit and Bordeaux 29 AVRIL receiver; front additionally bears a French "Angl./28 AVRIL/73/Amb. Calais" transit and a solid strike of a hexagonal "GB/1F90c" accountancy mark; the letter concerns not exceeding the normal 200 cases per month of French wine being shipped—good taste, Very Fine, a precursor to the Canal.
