 Mississippi River Flotilla, patriotic cover depicting a Mississippi River battle scene, "Our Gunboats Attacking the Rebel Forts" (Weiss SC-MB 74) franked with a pen-canceled 3¢ rose (65) tied by a manuscript cancel, "Young Hickory O., Mar 17", to Beverly, O.; opened a bit roughly at the right, edge wear and stamp damaged, about Fine. Suggested Bid $75
One hundred two warships (Timberclad, Ironclad, Tinclad, River Monitors, Rams and Gunboats) served in the Mississippi River Flotilla. Most of the vessels had complements of less than 100 and served less than two years. View details and enlarged photo

 Mississippi River Ironclad Battle, patriotic cover depicting a "Naval Battle off Fort Wright" (Weiss SC-MB 72), hand colored, unfranked and hand carried, the name of the addressee in German, as is the enclosed two-page letter, which is datelined Decatur, Ill., Jan 13, 1862; reduced at the left with edge wear and stamp damaged, about Fine. Suggested Bid $100
Fort Wright was a strongpoint protecting the approach to Memphis. It also served as a training facility for building fortifications and installion of batteries for protection from Naval combatants. It was abandoned in 1862 but reoccupied sporadically. View details and enlarged photo
