Lot 1435

Hong Kong, 1942 (?), very scarce Canadian Prisoner of War envelope from Hong Kong to Quebec (Yang JWE1), boxed "Sce des Prisonniers de Guerre" at top cover, with Japanese "Prisoner of War Post" at right; at left the Japanese "Censored/Hong Kong Prisoner of War Camp" inscription, with the censor seal of Hasegawa, visible under the "Opened by Examiner DB/644" tape; addressed to New Carlisle, Quebec, endorsed on reverse "Prisoners of War/Camp "A"/Hong Kong/P. Dallain" with New Carlisle receiver dated FE 8/43; lower right corner torn away, Fine.
Estimate HK$ 3,600 - 5,000

The writer, Paul Dallain, was a Rifleman in the 1st Battalion The Royal Rifles of Canada, one of the two Canadian regiments ("C" Force) sent to garrison Hong Kong in November 1941. The Royal Rifles arrived in Hong Kong on Nov. 16, 1941, three weeks (nearly to the day) before the Japanese launched their attacks on the island and on Pearl Harbor. This letter was written from Camp "A", the Bowen Road Hospital. While the New Carlisle receiver's date is unclear (it looks like the year could be "45"), we surmise it is actually "43", as in 1945 only POW
cards were permitted. Mr. Dallain was held for three years, eight months, being liberated on Aug. 8, 1945. He died in New Carlisle on May 17, 2017.
