China, 1897, Large Figures Wide Surcharge on Dowager 1st Ptg., ½¢ on 3ca orange yellow, inverted surcharge, with Shanghai Customs cds (1897 Mar? 24), Very Fine.
Scott 38b. Chan 47b.
Estimate HK$ 200,000 - 300,000

This exact stamp is the one illustrated in the 1944 Mar article by Chen Zhe Chuan in Shanghai. This stamp sparked a great philatelic debate in 1944 among the greatest Chinese philatelist of that time, which lasted for more than 6 months, with the result being the acceptance of this variety as genuine and the final formation of the "4 doubled and 8 inverted overprint varieties of the Empress Dowager stamps". The fact that this was the last variety proven genuine, among all 12, was important as it showed this stamp was very rare and had the least sightings, hence a general lack of knowledge about this variety. General belief was that this existed as a double pane and was CTO, so all recorded examples were used with the Customs Shanghai cds, with no mint stamps recorded. This stamp had been "lost" for the past 70 years, since 1944. A once-in-a-life-time chance to own the "Discovery Copy" of this major Dowager variety
