Lot 2051

1868, Grant - Colfax campaign cover, pretty illustrated cover franked with a grid-canceled 3¢ green (147) and tied by a clear "Yarmouth Port, Ms., Aug 22" c.d.s., to Provincetown, Mass.; reduced just a bit at the right, Very Fine, an interesting piece of history that never happened. Estimate $150 - 200
This must have been for Grant's 1872 re-election campaign, for which his running mate was actually Henry Wilson and not his sitting Vice-President, Schuyler Colfax. Colfax, thinking that Grant would not seek a second term, decided to try to win the Republican presidential nomination. When he learned that Grant was indeed going to run again, he reversed himself and tried to win the vice-presidential nomination, but lost to Wilson.
