Greenland, 1931 (Jul 29), von Gronau Transatlantic Flight Following a Northerly Extended Polar Route, A lovely four-country franking (Germany, Iceland, Canada, US) on cover addressed to Abendpost, a German-language newspaper in Chicago. Postmarked Berlin (29 July), Reykjavik (11 August), Longlac (1 September) and Chicago (3 September), and bearing red oval "Gronland-Wal" flight cachet, "Scoresbysund" straightline at upper left, and oval "Kolonien Godthaab" shield-and-crown administrative strike in black, along with blue oval Port Harrison Hudson's Bay Company marking in blue. Signed by Von Gronau who, along with three crew members, departed Sylt (List), Germany, on August 9 to examine an alternative trans-Atlantic route from Europe that used a more northerly Arctic route.
